In the "Lake of Fire" essay, it was noted that some biblical scholars interpret scriptural characterizations of Hell as a location where human sinners are held prior to the Judgment at the Great White Throne. These same scholars purpose individual punishments are metered out and the wicked are put to death, not living in eternal torment. Or, possibly, a second or third chance as read from Job 33.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Lake of fire will burn forever, and Satan, with his fallen angels, will suffer forever. The Devil and his fallen angels do not have souls or own whatever body they inhabit temporarily. But how about the first occupants of the Lake of Fire, the Beast and the false Prophet, both of whom will be human? They are, or will be humans who not only willfully follow Satan but they strive to separate other people from God. Keep in mind these "specially marked sinners" might not be born yet.
So some scholars contend all unmarked sinful humans will, after receiving their individual punishments, die in the lake's flames of sulfuric brimstone. Supporting that position, they offer two sets of verses, Malachi and Matthew.
Malachi 4:1-3, New King James Version. "For behold, the day is coming, Burning like an oven, And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up," says the Lord of hosts, "That will leave them neither root nor branch. But to you who fear My name. The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings; And you shall go out And grow fat like stall-fed calves. You shall trample the wicked, For they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this," Says the Lord of hosts.
Matthew 25:41-46, New King James Version. "Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.' "Then they also will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?' Then He will answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.' And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
So the arguments here are: The sinful humans are totally consumed by fire which is an eternal punishment. And, ashes or cinders are not alive, nor do they have body, spirit, or soul. The Antichrist and the false Prophet, being humans, may die after uncertain amounts of punishments. The ones who receive everlasting punishment exclusively are Satan, his fallen angels, and, possibly everyone that willingly accepts the mark of the Beast.
