India's struggle for Independence was against British Colonialism. Briefly speaking, India's struggle for freedom started even before A.O. Hume founded Indian National Congress. As early as in nineties of 18th century Raja Ram Mohan Roy came to the forefront. Before the establishment of Indian National Congress Surendra Nath Banerjea and others had set the ball rolling though not with great momentum. It was, however, in 1885 A.D. that Hume founded Indian National Congress which subsequently became one of the most leading organisations of country's national struggle. Outside Indian National Congress also there were individuals and organisations which were struggling for arousing nationalism among the people of India. This encyclopaedia presents comprehensive treatment about Indian War of Independence since 1857 to 1947 in an eloquent way. In March 1857, Mangal Pandey, a soldier of 34th Native Infantry attacked the British sergeant which is said to be the first war of Independence against British rule. Subsequently nation produced many important freedom fighters and thinkers of great repute. All of them, whether liberals or extremists or revolutionaries wanted that India should be a prosperous nation and win a respectable place and position in the family of nations. It covers the revolt of 1857 and the view points and the way of struggle of almost all our great freedom fighters in a broader perspective. The objective behind presenting the volumes is a deliberate attempt to pour history of Indian War of Independence in a systematic and accumulative form at one time.
