There is a restlessness that hums beneath the surface of modern life. It is the quiet, persistent feeling that something is missing, a sense of inner harmony that remains just out of reach. We chase it, believing it to be a destination. We look for it in the quiet of a week-long vacation, in the validation of a career achievement, in the brief silence after the kids are finally asleep. We search for peace as if it were a hidden treasure, a lost city, or a secret island that, once discovered, will grant us permanent residency in the land of calm. Yet, time and again, we find that these moments of tranquility are fleeting. The calm of the vacation evaporates under the heat of the first stressful work email. The glow of the promotion fades with the next looming deadline. The silence of the house is broken by the familiar hum of our own anxious thoughts.
