In our modern world, stress has become as common as breathing. We wake up to notifications, rush through traffic, navigate demanding workplaces, and collapse into bed only to repeat the cycle tomorrow. Yet stress itself is not inherently evil or something to be eliminated entirely. Understanding this fundamental truth is the first step toward developing a healthier relationship with the inevitable pressures of life.

Stress, in its most basic form, is our body's natural response to perceived threats or challenges. When our ancestors encountered a predator on the savanna, their stress response system activated, flooding their bodies with hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This physiological cascade prepared them to either fight the threat or flee from it, a mechanism we now call the fight-or-flight response. This system served our species well for millennia, helping us survive genuine threats to our physical safety.

The complexity of modern life, however, has created a mismatch between our ancient biology and contemporary challenges. Our stress response system cannot distinguish between a charging lion and a demanding email from our boss. Both situations trigger the same physiological cascade, but while running from a predator was a temporary, life-saving action, sitting at a desk while our body floods with stress hormones creates a chronic state of tension that our system was never designed to handle.
