The foundation of esoteric cosmology rests upon the concept of an absolute, undifferentiated source from which all existence emanates in successive waves of manifestation. This primordial unity, known by various names across different traditions—the Ain Soph of Kabbalah, the Tao of Chinese philosophy, the Brahman of Vedanta, or the One of Neoplatonism—represents a state of pure potential that transcends all categories of thought, being, and non-being. It is not a deity in any anthropomorphic sense, but rather the eternal ground of being itself, the unchanging foundation upon which the entire cosmic drama unfolds.

From this absolute unity emerges the first movement toward manifestation, often described as the divine will or logos, the initial impulse that sets creation into motion. This primordial emanation is not a temporal event but an eternal process, constantly occurring outside the confines of linear time and space. The emanation proceeds through what esoteric traditions describe as successive planes or dimensions of existence, each more dense and differentiated than the one before, yet each maintaining an essential connection to the source from which it springs.
