Beyond encountering dangerous criminals, a supernatural entity impedes the investigation. It may be linked to an Abstract painter who lived at Witherly Mansion and was obsessed with the occult. Their only living connection to the theft is an old friend of Kit's grandfather. But she incessantly discourages Amanda and Kit from continuing the investigation.
