한국 소설가이자 영화인 심훈의 대표 장편 소설 작품이다.
1935년 동아일보 창간 15주년 기념 소설 공모전에 당선된 작품으로 같은 해 동아일보에 연재되었다. 당시 활발히 전개되던 브나로드 운동(농촌계몽운동)을 그린 장편소설로 대중적인 성공을 거두었다.
