Henri Dengon becomes Chief Inquisitor of the kingdom. Rene receives the status of Prelate and the bull of the Pope himself, confirming his exceptional mission. The King of France grants Rene a title of nobility for services to the Holy Church.
Rene takes part in an inquisitorial investigation in which he boldly confronts the bloodthirsty inquisitors. After constant traveling around France, caused by the immediate duties of the Prelate, he met Professor Fernando Sigüenza. The professor told Rene that he was going to Cholet to the monastery of Saint Dominic, where, in fact, Rene spent his childhood.
Rene and Fernando go to Cholet together. On the way, they stop for the night at a small inn, where strange things happen. The owner reports that the Countess Eleanor de Oloron, who stopped to spend the night in his establishment, has disappeared. His son Gilles also disappeared without a trace. Rene intends to understand these mysterious events.
