When Jon's uncle left her and her mother his farm in the depths of the African bush, they were setting out into unknown territory in more ways than one. Luckily, they have help in the shape of their neighbour Alex Roe, who is always ready with assistance and advice—although Jon wishes he were not so arrogant and patronising! Her mother, however, finds him charming—as does the glamorous Madeleine, who is determined to persuade him to marry her. And as Jon gets to know him better, she realises that there is another side to Alex— a kind, caring side. But will he ever be able to see her as more than just 'little Jon', and realise that she is not a child, but a woman who yearns for his love?
