What was the purpose of the massive curtain, or veil, that was in the temple in Jerusalem? And what is so significant about the fact that it was torn from the top to the bottom at the precise time Jesus died on the cross? The answer to these questions should have you looking at how you approach God.
Theologian Timothy Luke Johnson says that the tearing of the temple curtain could symbolise "the end of the old covenant of atonement through animal sacrifice and the beginning of a 'new covenant'" (Johnson 379). In this "New Covenant" a priest would no longer be needed.
Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Scripture says, when Jesus died, the veil was torn from top to bottom. If the earthquake that happened at Jesus' death had ripped the curtain, it would have been torn from the bottom upward as the earth separated
