Alexandra's father wants her married. Only she prefers the poor stable boy to the rich newspaper owner. When her true love is sent away, and she's shipped off to live with an aunt, she feels doomed. At the turn of the twentieth century however, it's not proper for a woman to do as she pleases. Yet, headstrong, and adventurous, she leaves her aunt's house to find a job as a servant and giving up on love, until she meets Christian, a handsome, caring man that lives a sad, torturous life filled with nightmares from a brutal attack.
Christian has shut himself off from society because of the guilt he suffers for not being able to protect his mother from an attack that left her catatonic and hospitalized. When Alexandra falls into his life, he finds himself attracted to her beauty and her loving soul. He dreams of giving her the world, but her claims of loving another man, leave him disheartened until she makes him believe she only wants him.

Still, their plans immediately go awry when Alexandra begins having mishaps involving her old beau. It makes Christian wonder if his wife is using him, or someone else is trying to ruin their happiness.
