Published for the first time in December 1815, Emma is a satirical tale by Jane Austen about the pitfalls of misunderstood love. Emma Woodhouse, the protagonist, is a characterised as "handsome. clever and rich" in the first line. She is also rather spoilt. While planning the story, Austen reflected, "I am going to take a herione whom no-one but myself will much like."
