The years of the Civil War left the southern families struggling to reclaim there world. This book relates the story of Walter Finney, the owner of a small bank in a town thirty miles west of Atlanta, Georgia and what happened to his family because of the war. When a southern aristocrat from Savannah, Zachariah Hamilton, arrives in their town a year before the war broke out, to go to work for another lawyer there and to build himself a plantation, he is immediately taken with Finney's beautiful, blond-haired daughter Callie. This book is a story of the war years, the love affair between Callie and Zach, and how this small group of people managed to cleverly survive the ordeal during and after the war.

Though Zach becomes quit involved in the fight for Atlanta and the rebuilding of the city with the returning people there, it is also thanks to the families two faithful servants who help the family secretly survive the war and the years afterwards. His book will keep you on edge and amazed at their clever building of a secret bunker on the far end of their land, and all the amazing people who work to keep their world from crumbling.

Thanks to Walter Finney's hidden safe and stored gold pieces placed under the floorboards in his bank at the beginning of the war, this is used to help to rebuild their town. See what happens to this amazing family and what their life becomes after the war years.
