The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris, published in 2018, is based on the life of Slovakian Jew and Holocaust survivor Lale Sokolov (born Ludwig Eisenberg). The novel is focused on the love between Lale and Gita, a young woman he meets while tattooing inmates. It is a story of love and survival in the face of one of the biggest horrors in human history. In the automated system of mass murder known as the Holocaust, Lale assumes the role of the eponymous tattooist, permanently branding his fellow Jews and other inmates with the numbers that serve as a substitute for their identities. The Tattooist of Auschwitz describes numerous incidents from Lale and Gita's stay in the death camp, highlighting both instances of kindness and humanism as well as cruelty and evil.
