When reclusive Matthias Hawkins, once a respected lawyer, hears a knock on his door one snowy night, he finds his niece Danae, freezing on his porch. She'd run away from home and expects to stay with him while her neglecting mother flies from one fling to the other. He lets her in reluctantly. After all, he'd lost two children to a spiteful ex. All is well for a time and Danae even convinces him to hook up with a long-time love interest, the wholesome Rose Kirnsky. Matt learns to savour the joys of having family and friends again, completely sober this time. They start mending the wounds his own children and his ex inflicted when they abandoned him.
