Louisa May Alcott grew up among many of the well-known intellectuals of the day, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Alcott was an abolitionist and a feminist and remained unmarried throughout her life.
