Clara Grant, who is sixteen years old, and her mother Morgan Grant would both give anything to be completely different from one another. Morgan is resolute in her mission to protect her daughter from repeating the errors that she herself made. Morgan put her own aspirations on hold when she became pregnant and married at an extremely young age. Clara does not intend to pursue a career in the same field as her mother. Her mother is very predictable and doesn't have an ounce of spontaneity in her body.

Both Morgan and Clara have contrasting personalities and seek different things in life, making it increasingly difficult for them to coexist. The only person who has the ability to restore calm to the home is Chris-husband, Morgan who is also Clara's father and the mainstay of the family. But all of that tranquility is shattered when Chris is involved in a terrible accident that raises some serious questions. The tragic events that will unfold as a result of this will have an impact on a much wider audience than just Morgan and Clara.

Morgan finds comfort in the last person she expects to find it in, and Clara turns to the one boy she's been forbidden to see while they struggle to rebuild everything that crashed around them. The distance between the mother and daughter grows wider as each day goes by due to the accumulation of new lies, grudges, and misunderstandings. They have drifted so far apart that it is unlikely that they will ever find their way back to one another.
