Why should your ex come back when you have moved on?

An ex will try to come back after you've moved on because:

1: You're more desirable when you don't care for them. It's kind of like a magnet effect on people.

2: They still have feelings for you. They may have realized you were the one for them and want to go back. If it's been a decent amount of time, y'all might have changed, and now they see you as more fitting for them.

3: You left them, and they never found you. Your ex may have wanted you by their side always, and you have moved on, but they haven't.

If your ex is trying to come back, evaluate why they are your ex and if going back to them is worth it. However, keep in mind that if they ended it once, they won't hesitate to do it again. If y'all split and you've moved on, I would recommend that you still keep moving on.

Why do ex-lovers who dumped you also come back?

You're asking the wrong question.
You should be asking, "Why am I even entertaining the idea of an ex who dumped me coming back?"
Once they become an ex, that's it; it's over. They no longer have any privileges. They have no right to call or ask how you are. They are now a stranger who can harm you. but only if YOU permit them.
The answer to your question is, "Who cares?" Let them play their games somewhere else. You're busy getting on with your life.

And that gets us to the question of why some people go back to their ex.

because they're humans. as human as Brooks was. and they too have probably been institutionalized.

At one point in time, their ex was their universe. Their comfort. Their happiness. Their solace. Their family. Their home. a part of their mere existence.

They've tried hard to not remember their former partner. to forget them altogether. to "move on" (whatever that means). to be unaffected by their thoughts. Everyday. and probably they've failed.

They've probably shared moments together that were so beautiful that they can be considered sacred.

They've probably shared experiences together that were so unique that they've now become deeply embedded in their existence.

They've probably shared secrets together that were so raw that they still scream inside one another's heads.

They've probably shared such comfort together that they know it cannot be shared with anyone ever again.

Just like Brooks, they've probably come too far now. Their molecules have probably been altered way too much to go back to their original state now. or alter it any further.

And when it comes to finding a new partner, either they've already tried it and failed at it (like Brooks, who tried to live in the outside world and committed suicide within a few days).

Or they're extremely afraid. The very thought of even starting to get to know someone new is exhausting. The thought of someone like this entering their lives is nauseating. And imagining a future with a new someone is next to impossible.

They'd rather go back to their former partners—inside their respective Shawshank prisons. which were once their everything. Their home. Their family. Their solace. Their comfort.

where they felt "important," where they felt whole. where they could find their leaves again. Give life to the dying part of their soul again. Begin to feel important again.

Can you blame them?

I know I cannot
Let the past be the past. Move on.
