《柘园文录》收录的大多是作者南迁海隅后所写文字，主要有四个部分。"学人印象"是作者对硕儒、师长乃至前贤的印象式叙述，也有与侪辈友朋交游的简约素描之作；"香岛文踪"皆为作者所作与香港文学史有关的札记；"夜读偶记"是作者所作读书笔记，所读之书多为"九流三教之书，荒诞不经之典"；"海隅随笔"是作者南迁海隅后所作的杂文与散文，也有兴之所至的小考证等。书中还配有多幅珍贵的照片、藏书书影等，图文并茂，更为生动。
