Everyone knew when Maisie Morrison sat rocking on her darkened front porch collecting data. Hers was the only porch light off when everyone else's was on, and that was the dead giveaway. Maisie, unaware, thought herself clever as she whiffed honeysuckle and dewy grass that infused the night air. She monitored who was going up and down the road as well as where — when — and possibly why. Folks frequently referred to Maisie as 'Iona's little anchor-biddy' because she dispensed tidbits of news faster than CBC. "How'd you know that, Maisie?" one might ask her. Maisie would click her tongue and nod out her 'you never mind now' wink.
