Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a serious infection of the reproductive organs that can lead to long-term complications if left untreated. PID typically occurs when bacteria from the vagina or cervix spread upwards into the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, causing inflammation and damage to the delicate tissues of these organs. This infection is most commonly caused by sexually transmitted bacteria such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, but can also be caused by other types of bacteria.
Symptoms of PID can include pelvic pain, fever, abnormal vaginal discharge, and painful intercourse. Diagnosis is usually made through a combination of physical examination, laboratory tests, and imaging studies. Treatment typically involves a course of antibiotics to clear the infection, as well as pain relief medication and rest. Early detection and treatment are crucial for preventing long-term complications such as chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy.
