When the play was premiered for the first time, a huge controversy erupted, not only because of the play's title but also because of the portrayal of forbidden love between brother and sister, Giovanni and Annabella.
Owing to several violent scenes in the play, it was hugely criticized by contemporary critics and reviewers. The play presents five murders openly. Putana, Annabella's tutor and servant, is blinded, and her father also drops dead.
The violence reaches its peak during the brutal climax when Giovanni enters the feast. All are shocked to see that he has Annabella's heart on his dagger.
Similarly, several other offensive scenes in the play were unacceptable to drama fans at the time. To better understand the play, please go through this short treatise.
