Vulvar cancer is a rare but serious form of cancer that affects the vulva, which is the external female genital area. The vulva includes the clitoris, labia majora, labia minora, and the vaginal opening. Vulvar cancer can develop in any of these areas and can occur at any age, but it is most commonly diagnosed in women over the age of 50. The disease can present with a variety of symptoms, including itching, burning, and pain in the vulva, as well as changes in the skin or the appearance of a lump or sore.
Treatment for vulvar cancer typically involves surgery to remove the cancerous tissue, and may also include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these treatments. With early detection and appropriate treatment, many women with vulvar cancer can be cured, but the disease can be challenging to treat in advanced stages. Regular gynecologic exams and self-examinations can help detect vulvar cancer early, and women with risk factors such as a history of precancerous changes or other types of cancer should discuss appropriate screening and prevention strategies with their healthcare provider.
