Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that affects the cells on the surface of the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection. While cervical cancer is highly preventable with regular screenings and HPV vaccination, it is still a significant health concern for women worldwide, especially in low-resource settings.
Symptoms of early-stage cervical cancer may not be noticeable, which is why regular cervical cancer screenings are so important. Treatment options for cervical cancer depend on the stage of the cancer, and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapy. Women who have been treated for cervical cancer require ongoing follow-up care and monitoring to detect any signs of recurrence.
