From time immemorial travel has been fascinating, and also a means of pleasure to the human being. In ancient times, the travelers were merchants, pilgrims, seekers of knowledge, adventurers and others who were desirous to seek new exciting experiences of a varieties of land and people. Thus travel is not a recent phenomenon, while tourism is relatively considered to be a modern development. Tourism can be distinguished by its mass character in the present age. A few travelers went out in the past for business and other purposes. Due to the development of science and technological advancements, travel has been diversified in the form of pleasure and recreational tourism. Since last two decades, the study of tourism is undergoing remarkable transformation both in its contents and research, as well as its methodology and approaches. It is based on much more conceptual and empirical evolution. The present study of tourism in Nainital region has been selected because of its unique personality and characteristics for the development of tourism, and also for its unique geographical and environmental background. This study region is partly from Nainital and partly from Almora districts. It contains maps, coloured pictures and tables as well. The aim of this volume is (a) to analyse the nature of tourism, (b) to highlight the issues involved, and (c) to evolve a healthy relationship between the environmental factors and tourism. Further the study aims to bring out the potentialities of the region which may help in further improvement. Special emphasis has been given to the environmental parameters and trekking. This book is aimed to serve a dual purpose: (a) to provide information to the tourists, and (b) to suggest way and means for the development of tourist in the region. This region has a great potentialities if more attention is given for the improvement of the amenities. This volume would be useful for tourists, travellers, researchers in tourism, tourist managers and the like.
