Dale Kenway has a reason why he doesn't want people to think he's a hero.

All Dale had ever wanted to do was work on cars. He wasn't thinking about the Korean War when he dropped out of college in his freshman year to work as a mechanic. He didn't expect to be sent overseas to fight in a war he knew nothing about; nor did he expect to be called a hero after he tried to save the life of a fellow soldier.

When he is sent home, his family and friends keep insisting that he is a hero despite his protests. The truth is that the burns on his arms and hands aren't his only scars. Something happened in Korea that he can't share with anyone.
