Ever wonder why toilet paper is so white? Should it not be brown or beige if made from wood pulp? Unfortunately, consumers believe the tissue must be white to indicate it is clean, so the paper industries use chlorine and chlorine dioxide to bleach the paper. Unknown to the consumer, these chemicals react with organic molecules in the wood and other fibers to create toxic by-products, including dioxins. Additionally, chlorinated toilet paper contains the highest number of furans out of all the cosmetic tissues.
