ABOUT THE BOOK

When Jennette McCurdy went to her first acting audition, she was six years old. Jennette would do anything to fulfill her mother's wish for her one and only daughter to achieve fame. As a result, she followed her mother's advice to "calorie limit," eating little and weighing herself five times every day. She had costly home renovations while her mother reprimanded her "Okay, so your eyelashes aren't visible. You don't suppose Dakota Fanning tints hers, do you?" Mom even gave her a shower till she was sixteen years old while sharing her email, diaries, and all of her money.

Jennette describes all of this in I'm Glad My Mom Died in harrowing detail, just as she does when she describes what transpires when the dream ultimately materializes. She immediately becomes famous after being cast in the new ICarly Nickelodeon sitcom. While Jennette is plagued with anxiety, guilt, and self-loathing, which manifests as eating problems, addiction, and a string of disastrous relationships, Mom is overjoyed, emailing fan club moderators and getting to know the paparazzi by first name ("HI Galel"). These problems only worsen when, shortly after costarring in Sam & Cat, an ICarly spinoff with Ariana Grande, her mother passes away from cancer. Finally, after learning about therapy and giving up acting, Jennette starts to rehabilitate and makes a life-changing decision.
