Princess Sighing Dove, an adolescent Native American, was unable to sense joy, even long after her mother died only days after her birth. The burden of grief in the loss of the mother was very great for both father and daughter; it even threatened the unity of their tribe. The mother had also been so loving toward the surrounding prairie animals that her loss was clearly seen in them as well.

In desperation, the Sighing Dove's father calls an assembly of the prairie animals to ask their help in searching for the true smile—inner joy—for his daughter. In their mission, Sighing Dove and her animal friends encounter treacherous dangers and sinister enemies.
