This book is read-along version. Following what she is sure is the sound of someone crying, Mary comes to a room in her uncle's huge house. There she finds her uncle's son, Colin, who says he is ill and has to stay in bed. He asks Mary to come and see him regularly. Mary promises to do so, and visits him every day. She is in two minds.
