Chickens are supposed to lay eggs. Some chickens lay eggs when quite young, but other chickens develop more slowly. What does it feel like when all the chickens except one have already laid eggs?
Four chickens—Annie, Belinda, Cutie, and Darlin'—come to live in the blue coop in the spring, when they are soft and fluffy chicks. They are already growing feathers, though, when the fifth chick, Evie, arrives. She is young and small and very shy. In the autumn, the chicks have grown up into chickens of all different colors. One by one, the older chickens begin laying eggs. But days go by, and still Evie has not laid an egg. Although Evie is sad, her owner will love her no matter what, even if she never lays an egg.
This children's story shares the power of encouragement and empathy and the value of being responsible to help other living creatures. This book also teaches about the different chicken breeds, what they look like and the different color eggs they lay.
