Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and Ali Hannigan feels anything but loved. Her fiancé went to Europe for a last hoorah with the boys, when Ali receives a call that he's not coming back. Ali's on her way to an girls' weekend in Vegas, a last-ditch effort to drown her sorrows in a few nights under the lights when her mom calls her home for a family emergency, to run her mom's café.
Ali's relieved to find out someone still needs her.
Upon arriving home, Ali learns her mom, Maggie, has, unexpectedly, lost a good friend, Natalie. Maggie leaves for New York to help Natalie's brother, Joshua, Maggie's crush from her high-school days, pack up Natalie's apartment. Joshua's thrilled to find Maggie's divorced, and Maggie's surprised to find Joshua is single.
Ali hits the ground running at home as she struggles to manage her mom's small-town café. The challenge is a welcome distraction from Ali's recent heartbreak, as well as Alex, her mom's renter, writer, and all-around helpful, nice guy, which shouldn't get on Ali's last nerve, but he does. But after working beside Alex for a week, she's smitten, but remains a cynic. It's impossible to fall in love in six days, isn't it?
