Each of these stories reveals the impact slavery had on the people of this" land of the free", this democratic nation where all men are created

equal and are endowed by their Creator with life, liberty, justice and the pursuit of happiness. Slavery is often viewed through the eyes of the slave, as if its indignities and inhumane treatment had no impact on the human condition, the concept of love, hate, revenge, beauty and, of course, our notions of freedom and a government of we the people. We all, even today, feel its impact.
