A stroke is a condition that affects the arteries both within the brain and those that lead to it. In the United States, it is the leading cause of disability and the fifth highest cause of death.
A stroke happens when a blood vessel that supplies oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or breaks. This can happen for several reasons (or ruptures). When something like this takes place, a portion of the brain is deprived of the blood (and oxygen) it requires, which ultimately leads to the death of that portion of the brain as well as brain cells. Within minutes of being deprived of oxygen in their blood supply, brain cells begin to die. To help prevent a stroke, learn about the causes and the effects that can raise your odds of getting one.
