Perched high in the clouds overlooking the city of Armidale solid walls surround the edifice. The valley falls below the prison mound, but no-one inside can see the colourful tree lined streets. Everything is dark, no sunshine reaches the cells where men are caged and kept at the pleasure of the Government.

Some will leave this place; others will be carried in a rough wooden box.

Shivering and frightened the lonely men await the hangman, thinking what it will be like to have the noose around their neck, will it be quick, will I be brave in those last moments?

Time passes slowly and quickly, all at the same time – but he waits. The moment comes and there in the yard is filled with inviting warm light the last sunrise he will ever see. He is not alone and there is some comfort in that.

Then the Gaol goes quiet again, making ready for the next victim of the executioners.
