It's going to take the whole team to get Hughes Investigations clear of the criminal infiltration that started with Jeffries, and continues with the Ruiz brothers wanting to control her company.
There are still hostiles implanted in her business and Caela is having none of that. Hughes is investigating cases and lives are still on the line, but it's hard to work when you're second-guessing every person and every decision.
Her father's surprising assistance turns out to be worth more than a simple debt being paid.
The additions to her team are both positive – and a little negative. It's still a man's world and having a woman in charge can be challenging for some. But Caela's not tolerating any of their crap. Not even a little bit.
"Ah, having problems taking orders from a woman younger than you?" Sam asked Aidan.
Aidan just shrugged. "I've explained my position to Ms. Hughes. If she..."
"If she finds you incapable of working cohesively with the rest of the team, she will remove you from the team," Sam interrupted Aidan. "Get over yourself, man. You're good for the company, and you seem decent enough. If your inability to move past your misogyny is going to ruin it, best we find out now."
"Good gods, does she have you all under her spell?" Aidan cursed as he got to his feet.
"Spell?" Caela asked.
"Don't you have a job to do? Or do I need to help you with that, too?" Caela asked Aidan, eyes flashing.
Aidan shook his head and left the office, the door banging against the wall as he threw it open and stormed down the hall.
It's a dance between life and death when Caela faces off against old enemies and new.
Caela takes care of those she considers 'hers' – family and staff included. It's only when she reads her father's old journals that she starts to see just how tangled everything truly is. From past events to present situations, it's all intertwined.
When past and the present collide, will Caela survive?
