As professor of church history for nearly twenty years at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, Rev. Dr. Ross Mackenzie translated or wrote over twenty theological books and lectured internationally. Mackenzie also founded the American chapter of the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1989 Rev. Dr. Ross Mackenzie was asked to serve as the first full-time director of the Department of Religion of the Chautauqua Institution. He retired from that position in 1999 to become the Chautauqua historian.

The title of this lecture is, "Chautauqua 1874: The Social and Religious Environment."
