Learning the Basic Technique
Violin is a very popular instrument, enjoyed by people of all ages across the globe. The violin has a distinctive sound that can be used in a wide range of music genres, from classical to contemporary.
Despite its popularity, the violin can be quite challenging to learn how to play. This is because the violin is held differently than other instruments, and the strings are tuned to different notes. In addition, the bow is held with the right hand while the left hand fingers the strings.
However, do not be discouraged! With practice and patience, anyone can learn how to play the violin. In this section, we will go over some of the basic techniques you need to know in order to get started playing the violin.
How to Hold the Violin
The first thing you need to do is learn how to hold the violin. The violin is held under the chin with the left hand, and supported by the shoulder. The bow is held in the right hand.
To hold the violin, place the neck of the violin against your jaw and tilt your head slightly to the left. Then, place your left hand on the neck of the violin and slide it up until your pinky finger is touching the scroll (the decorative end of the violin).
Your thumb should be resting on top of the neck, and your other fingers should be curled around the neck. Be sure not to grip the neck too tightly, as this will cause tension in your hand and make it difficult to play.
Next, place your right hand on top of the bow and curl your fingers around it. You should be holding the bow between your thumb and first two fingers. Again, do not grip too tightly – you should be able to move your fingers easily along the bow.
