Gambling with the Hidden Epidemic of STDs: Choices, Risks, Consequences

WHY are children aged 15 reporting STDs to the CDC?

Ignorance, Deadly It's about the Microbes! Will you be affected? 78% of 12th graders have had one or more sex partners. Ignorance can be deadly. Condoms may prevent pregnancy, NOT STDs! Increased casual and promiscuous sex, aided by rampant internet and printed pornography, is causing sexually transmitted infections and diseases (STIs and STDs) to proliferate and become epidemic in all regions of the world.

Lack of or Enticing Information? The choice to become sexually active at any age presents increasing challenges to be free of disease. Sexual development, social learning, genes and memes all play a part. Missing from much of the dialogue is basic information about the biological, physical, emotional, ethical, psychological and financial effects on sex partners and their families, and the effects on society.

Disease, Statistical Certainty These serious infections and diseases mutate and adversely affect immune systems in people of all ages. STDs have resulted in cancers, mental illness, chronic fatigue, babies born blind and other life-long debilitating conditions. Some partners remain asymptomatic for years, spreading infections, while cures are diminishing. Social mores, media, drugs and alcohol also have an impact. Multiple partners increase the odds of developing STDs.

Knowledge, Health, Choices Reading Gambling with the Hidden Epidemic of STDs: Choice, Risks, Consequences is an opportunity to explore basic health and social concepts, including biology (and microbes), to guide choices and avoid the pain and suffering of STDs. Every son and daughter on earth, and those who have them, need to learn and have an obligation to share this knowledge with those they love for health and well-being.
