During the Roman era, the Colosseum was an important entertainment venue. It was used for gladiator contests, animal hunts, and mock sea battles. The Romans also brought huge volumes of water into the Colosseum. In addition to the arena, there were eleven aqueducts and four drains. The aqueducts and underground passages were used for the water.
