Hungary has been an important crossroads of commerce, ideas, and armies since the Magyars. For an extended period, the Ottoman Empire and the Austrian Empire ruled almost two-thirds of Hungary.
This occupation had a significant economic, military, and cultural influence on the nation.
In reaction to the expanding dominance of Prussia (the German-speaking state that gave birth to modern Germany) and Russia, the Austrian Habsburg emperor promised Hungary an "equal part" of the empire in 1867.
The Austro-Hungarian Empire was established.
Hungary gained independence after the Austro-Hungarian defeat in WWI. Unfortunately, its position rendered it vulnerable to the greater powers in the region, and Hungary sided with Hitler during WWII.
Hungary became a hardline communist state under Soviet authority after the Soviet invasion of the war.
