The last person you expect to get ambushed by is a lawman ... but that's what happened to Blake Durant.
Sometimes mistakes happen, of course—but it was no mistake later on, when the pair of them were attacked by owlhoots and the lawman stopped a bullet.
The young marshal was seriously injured, and would certainly die before Durant could get him to the nearest town. Unless, that was, he opted for a nearer, isolated way-station, where the beautiful young woman who ran the place might be able to remove the bullet and save the young man's life.
There was just one problem, however.
The woman was Sue Ketchell, and she was the wife of the kill-crazy outlaw Jud Ketchell. And Ketchell had just escaped from the hangman's rope and was headed home, to wreak vengeance on the partners who'd betrayed him.
The showdown was going to take place at the way-station ... and only one would survive!
