Have you ever wondered how the things around you got there? We know people begin as tiny babies who grow quickly, and flowers begin as seeds in the ground; with sunlight and water, the seeds become plants. But some things do not grow—things we might use or eat or play with every day. Where do those things come from? A chair, for example, is not grown but built; a cabinetmaker takes wood and cuts it into shapes and nails those together into a chair. But before that, the wood must come from a tree that grew from a seed planted in the ground. We must remember that everything around us was either made or grown, but all of it comes from the earth. How can we give back to the earth that has given us so much? Engaging and insightful, this children's poem tells the story of how a seed grows to become a tree that is eventually cut down to make a chair.
