BEYOND EPISTEMOLOGY: CONTINGENCY, IRONY AND CONVERSATION
1. INTRODUCTION
For modern epistemology, to know is to represent internally and exactly what is outside the mind. This means that the human mind is like a mirror and that there is an external reality independent of us. This idea that our beliefs are copies of external reality is known as REPRESENTATIONISM.
Representationism presents some questionable points (questions of the type: How to know if a representation is an adequate copy of reality. Richard Rorty suggests that the problem with representationalism lies in its attempt to reach a definitive foundation of knowledge. IT CRITICIZES THE POSSIBILITY OF A FOUNDATIONISM AND INVITES TO ABANDON THE MODERN EPISTEMOLOGICAL VOCABULARY.
