This book is where I was first exposed to the "Umwelten" concept, which quickly became one of my favorites. I was exposed to a lot of fresh information and I learned a lot of new things. You won't find a simple description of the senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, or touch anywhere in this article. Instead? Ed Yong is a refreshing experience for the senses. He walks you through a word while looking at it through the eyes of another. From a wide variety of species possessing extraordinary perceptive ability. He takes you out of the human perspective and into another sense altogether.
There was also an amazing update addressing the anthropocene, which is the present geologic epoch, as well as how we are transforming our environment, and how it is affecting the fauna. From lights that muddle the senses to strange chemicals and environmental upheaval, as well as the implications of these things for a variety of different animals, this book covers it all.
It deals with a topic that is really interesting to think about. How the senses of animals can provide us a glimpse into a reality that cannot be seen, but which we each interpret in our own unique way. Because of the unique combination of our individual senses and the image that is formed around us, we each have a unique perspective on the world in which we live.
