Born to a poor family in Virginia, Thomas Sutpen arrives in Jefferson, Mississippi and quickly digs himself into the local aristocracy. Having built his mansion, planted his cotton fields, and fathered a son and daughter, Thomas seems to have everything going for him. When his son Henry invites his university roommate to visit, the secrets of Thomas' past come to light, leading to tragic events that will affect the whole Sutpen family.
Published in 1936, Absalom, Absalom! depicts the rise and fall of Southern plantation culture around the time of the American Civil War. Telling a single story from multiple perspectives, the layers of Thomas Sutpen's history are slowly revealed through each narrator's personal experiences with racism, violence, and sacrifice.
