It is exciting to observe that the oldest, the smallest, and the bottom of those islands lie nearest to Japan. One of those—Midway Island—is used because the United States mid-Pacific cable station. Properly talking, the Hawaiian Island institution have to cowl all of the islands on this chain thousand miles lengthy. The mountains of the huge islands upward push from 3,000 to 14,000 toes above the ocean-stage. Between this majestic variety of island mountains and the "Giants of the Rockies," alongside the western coast of the USA, lies a hard ocean valley abounding in hills and deep ravines with a mean intensity beneathneath the ocean-floor of approximately 2,six hundred fathoms, or 15,six hundred toes.
