FHRP is designed to provide first hop redundancy on gateway router. In this technology, two or more routers works together in group which share single virtual ip address. This Virtual IP address is used as default gateway for LAN connected end users. One router in group acts as active router and others standby or listening which is vary in protocol to protocol. If active router gets fails and it is not coming up within hold time expiration, then standby router will take place of default gateway. Standby router will use same virtual IP. So, this technology provides failover backup for end users.
