"When a sensible woman has a reasonable question put to her, and evades it by a flippant answer, it is a sure sign, in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred, that she has something to conceal."

On a moonlit night in London, art teacher Walter Hartright gives directions to a lost young woman dressed all in white. Soon after, he notices how similar his new pupil Laura Fairlie looks to the mysterious lady, escaped asylum patient Anne Catherick. The resemblance is also noticed by Laura's scheming fiancé Sir Percival Glyde, who conspires to exchange the women's identities for his own benefit. Aided by Laura's devoted half-sister Marian, can Walter save Laura from the Baron's greedy clutches?

A tightly plotted whodunit, Wilkie Collins' sensational masterpiece blends Victorian gothic horror with elements of detective fiction. Written in 1859, The Woman in White was first serialized in All the Year Round, a magazine run by the author's good friend Charles Dickens.

Kobo Editions offers this fully-accessible version of the original text for your enjoyment.
