"The Accident" is a short story about a young woman who had an incredible talent for volleyball. One day as part of conditioning she and her teammates were running up a very steep hill in Colorado. A driver hit her and mangled one of her teammates. She then lost everything she had worked for all of her life. He blamed the accident on the girls for not being dressed properly. In trying to move past the accident and forgive her trespasser, her needs were ignored. This is mostly a parable about what is wrong with our society. We blame women for things that are not their fault. They then listen to their accusers and live with the pain for the rest of their lives. This story also showcases what often happens when two people of different genders seek help from an ecclesiastical leader if one of them wronged another. It is my understanding that this has gotten better in the last decade, but no one can undo what was done to all the women who were hurt in the past.
